]]>From the classrooms, where passions are discovered, to the hallways, where lifelong friendships begin, it is undeniable that ISKL has played a significant role in molding our Panthers past and present into the individuals they are today.
A special thanks to Angelique Kafoud (’21) and Silvia Faldini (’07), two alumni donors who generously contributed to our first #ISKLGivingTuesday initiative last year. Their support brings us closer to inspiring our learners to become global citizens.
You, too, can make a meaningful contribution to ISKL’s vision by donating to our #ISKLGivingTuesday fund till the end of December 2023. Visit https://iskl.site/3tbhtd2 to learn more about how you can show your support. Giving back isn’t just about gratitude; it’s about paving the way for the next generation of dreamers and achievers.

As for my last day of school in 2019, that memory will stay with me forever.

]]>The post Empowering Dreams – ISKL’s 2023 Giving Tuesday Campaign appeared first on ISKL Alumni.
]]>On November 28, 2023, ISKL joined the worldwide celebration of #GivingTuesday for the second time. Our participation in this initiative aligns with our vision of caring for others and creating a better world. Throughout the month of November, we showcased the different ways altruism and philanthropy can manifest, creating a ripple effect of kindness that extends beyond our school. This effort has inspired others to join us in making a positive difference.
Last year, we raised an incredible amount of RM 14,950, where 50% of the funds raised were donated to the ISKL Inspire Campaign (formerly the Inspiration Fund), which is dedicated to People, Places, and Programs. Thanks to the donations fueled by our wonderful PTA and Alumni donors, we have been able to purchase equipment such as a Mass Run Timing System and a Sports Video Analysis System, as well as fund the beautification of the High School (HS) Garden and Mural, the HS Theatre Commons and run workshops by USA Guest Conductor Frank Troyka and Australian Artist-in-Residence, Mark Hill for the Middle School (MS) and HS Theatre students.
Next semester, we have more projects lined up, such as a student-led Batik Collaboration and Installation in Elementary School (ES).
“Events such as the Panther Run are truly community events that welcome participants of all ages and from every facet of our community. Beyond the curriculum, the outcome of having a Mass Running Timing System will be that the students will have a low-barrier opportunity to experience the benefits of being a part of a running community, which include increased fitness, feelings of achievement, engagement in a challenge, social connection, and mental well-being.” ~ Julie Jonsson, HS Faculty and Panther Run Founder
“Middle School, High School, and, in particular, International Baccalaureate (IB) Theatre students benefit from workshops with theater artists who are not just teachers but are actively working with theatre companies. The intended outcome of this project is for our students to experience firsthand the talents of a professional theater artist, which allows them to go beyond the classroom experience.” ~ Tina Casey, HS/IB Theatre Teacher & Performing Arts Director on Mark Hill Artist-in-Residence Workshop
“The system easily records, analyzes, and shares footage with the team and community. No current solution for recording game footage is as feasible – other solutions are too expensive or time-consuming. It allows students to reflect on their learning and improve their outcomes. They can be more enthusiastic with feedback and highlights created automatically from each game.”~ Sim Huang, HS Teacher & Coach
“At ISKL, we cultivate passions and competencies to help our learners to become global citizens. This is a great opportunity for students to connect to our current unit in Batik and traditions and see how art is a feasible career that is lucrative and sustainable.” ~ The ES Art Department
The remaining 50% was given to the High School (HS) Student Leadership Team, which distributed the money to three charitable service clubs selected by the students. They were the Circle of Alliance for Refugee Empowerment (CARE) Club, the Children’s Future Education Centre (CFEC) Club, and the ISKL Medics Club.
“The donation from ISKL has been nothing short of transformative for our Fugee students. With these generous contributions, we’ve been able to expand our physical education offerings, both indoors and outdoors. The positive effects have been astounding. Our students now revel in a fun and active way of learning while gaining exposure to a wide array of sports, including basketball, badminton, and small-field tennis. This gift has truly opened doors to a world of physical development and excitement for our young learners.” ~ Kudzai Charlton, aka K.C., Head of Education & Principal, Fugee School, on receiving the equipment from the Circle of Alliance for Refugee Empowerment (CARE) Club
“We used the funds received to purchase essential foods such as rice, milk, eggs, oil, noodles, and learning materials such as books and writing materials for the refugee children. We truly appreciate the Giving Tuesday funds that were approved and given to our club, which have helped improve the lives and living conditions of our CFEC schoolchildren.” ~ Children’s Future Education Center (CFEC) Club
“Our objective is to provide refugees with vital healthcare information and tools, educate them, and allow them to explore their passions and interests. With the donations we were graciously gifted from #GivingTuesday, our team has assembled first aid kits for the Chin refugees and conducted training on how to use them professionally.
We hope many people from our community will donate to the upcoming #GivingTuesday so that many other ISKL service clubs can also fulfill their goals!” ~ Kayne H. (‘24), Mei Y. (‘24), Rika S. (‘24) and Sienna L. (‘25), ISKL Medics Club
This year, we aim to raise a total of RM20,000 (approx. USD 4,500) by the end of the year on December 31, 2023, which will allow us to give RM10,000 to student-led and chosen charitable causes and RM10,000 to the Inspire Campaign. Any amount donated will play a big part in enabling us to meet our goal: even a donation of RM 50, or USD 10, will play a significant role. Will you help us reach our goal?

]]>The post In Memoriam – Robert B. Gaw appeared first on ISKL Alumni.
]]>We mourn the loss of a remarkable colleague and celebrate the enduring legacy of a person whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our school.
Robert B. Gaw, affectionately known as Bob, was a dedicated educator and visionary leader who embarked on a journey of excellence from the beginning. Graduating with a Business Administration degree from the University of California, Berkeley, his journey began in 1953 as a teacher in Nevada, USA, which led to roles as a principal, coach, and superintendent.
In 1970, Robert B. Gaw was invited to lead the International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) as HoS, embarking on a transformative journey. He played a pivotal role in managing the construction of a new campus in Jalan Kolam Ayer Lama. He is remembered for involving teachers in the design and curriculum development, significantly improving the school. He also led ISKL through its first accreditation process and achieved many other accomplishments. Even today, we can see his valuable contribution to our school whenever we enter the Robert B. Gaw Theatre.
Gaw, fondly remembered by many, held ISKL in his heart, as shared by his son Kevin Gaw (’78).
“He and my mom, Jane Gaw (who passed in 2021), cherished their time in Malaysia and loved working at ISKL, where they developed deep and lasting friendships with ISKL staff, faculty, and parents. Bob and Jane also experienced the joy of supporting the learning and development of many ISKL students. There’s no doubt that ISKL and Malaysia were profoundly important to Bob, Jane, and the rest of the family.
If you have a cup of coffee or tea in hand, a glass of water, or a tumbler, please raise it and honor Bob with your thoughts. He will be missed greatly by many.”
Gaw’s passing is a profound loss to our school. Still, his memory will forever be a guiding light, reminding us of the heights we can achieve when we commit ourselves to excellence, mentorship, and selfless service.
As we honor his memory, let us pledge to carry forward his vision, continue his excellent work, and live up to the standards of integrity and dedication he set for us. In doing so, we ensure that his legacy lives on in our work and the lives we touch.
Thank you to our ISKL community for these heartfelt eulogies that have captured the essence of Robert B. Gaw’s life. Your words bring comfort and solace during this difficult time, helping us remember and honor his memory.

]]>As far as I know, no one has ever met or seen my doppelganger, at least for now.
Nothing in particular. However, I remember that when I was at university, I always used to take a book with me to read during the subway ride.
Everyone tells me that I look a lot younger than I seem. The fairest answer would be between 25 and 30 years old.
This year I made advanced-level cross-stitch patterns.
I would choose “My Dog Skip” by Willie Morris. It’s a memoir about the author’s childhood with his dog, Skip. The book is appropriate for high school students (although everyone should read it) because it includes themes like growing up and friendship. It is so well written that, while reading it, one person can actually hear the author telling the story of his life as a child. One piece of advice for sensitive people: while reading it, keep a packet of handkerchiefs near you because it brings tears to your eyes!
Life is made both of ups and downs. One thing I recommend to current Seniors is never to give up if you fail something and to surround yourself with people that will be there for you during the ups and, most of all, during the downs.
In ISKL, I actually liked all classes (except math), but my favorite ones were English as a Second Language (ESL) with Dr. Narsiman and Mrs. Gallagher and Beginners Band with Ms. Davey. The first was because those classes helped me learn English from scratch – every day was a new word. The second one is because I’ve always enjoyed music, and Beginners Band was the right place to start playing the flute.
I still own my uniform t-shirts, my Grade 7 yearbook, the ISKL awards I earned in Grades 6 and 7, a humanities notebook, and most of all, my Malaysia Week notebook.
I attended the Ampang Campus between 2000 and 2002 (Grades 6 and 7). My favorite places were at the Robert B. Gaw Theatre, where I participated in all Middle School (MS) assemblies and concerts with the band, and the swimming pool, where I improved my swimming skills.
My first day at ISKL was exciting. Even though I couldn’t speak English, I wasn’t scared and couldn’t wait to start school. My last day was really sad because I enjoyed going to ISKL. I remember crying on the bus while all the teachers waved us goodbye. I’ll always have very fond memories of those two years at ISKL.
Silvia Faldini (’07) earned her B.A. in Modern Languages and Literature (English and German) in 2011 and her M.A. in Modern Languages (English and German with a focus on language, linguistics, and didactics) in 2014. She lives in a small town in Piemonte (Italy) and does translations and gives language lessons.

]]>Remember the moments that made ISKL feel like a second home? The laughter echoing through the hallways, the unforgettable field trips, and those teachers who made a lasting impact on your life? Well, it’s time to come together and give back to the place that gave us so much.
Giving Tuesday is just around the corner, November 28, 2023, and we’re thrilled to invite you to join our special giving campaign. As proud graduates of ISKL, you know the difference that a tight-knit community and quality education can make. This Giving Tuesday, let’s ensure that current and future students have the same opportunities that you cherish.
Here’s the scoop: Your generous donations will serve two incredible purposes. Firstly, we’re dedicated to nurturing the spirit of giving in our students. With your support, we can empower them to engage in meaningful charitable initiatives that create a positive ripple effect in the community. Imagine the impact they’ll make with your contribution!
But that’s not all. You’ll also be giving to the Inspire Campaign, a fund with the mission to fuel extracurricular projects that go above and beyond the regular curriculum. These are the projects that light up young minds, foster creativity, and spark passions. Your donations will directly fund these projects, ensuring that ISKL remains a place of innovation and inspiration.
Last year, thanks to some generous donations from alumni, we raised RM15,000 of our RM20,000 goal. This year, we hope to meet, or better yet, exceed, last year’s goal.
So, how can you get involved? It’s super easy:
🎁 Make a Donation: No matter the size, every donation counts. Whether it’s the cost of your morning coffee or a more substantial gift, your support will make a difference. Make your donation anytime between now and November 29, 2023.
💌 Spread the Word: Share our campaign with your fellow alumni. Let’s create a wave of support that shows the world the incredible impact of the ISKL community. Tag @ISKLAlumni on social media and #ISKLGivingTuesday2024
Get Involved: Participate in the Giving Tuesday Panther Run on December 2, 2023. More details will be shared via our social media.

]]>Alumni who wish to visit campus for a tour should contact [email protected] and make an appointment at least three business days before their arrival. We will provide your details to the security at the main guardhouse so that you may enter campus. Head over to the main administrative office and collect your heritage map. This map was carefully prepared and designed by your fellow ISKL Panther, Zarina Othman (‘09). It will take you on a journey through the Ampang Hilir campus, highlighting key stops for Alumni such as the ISKL History Gallery, the heritage name plaques, and the Gazebo transported from the old Ampang campus. There are sixteen stops on the tour, highlighting our shared memories and Alumni contributions to our beautiful campus.
As those of you who have stopped by in person and asked will already know, ISKL does not issue Alumni cards any longer. This practice actually stopped when we moved to the new campus in 2018. If you already have an Alumni card issued prior to 2018, you may hang on to it as a keepsake, but please note that all visitors to campus, including alumni, should check-in at the main guardhouse and collect a visitor badge when entering campus. At the same time, alumni who wish to visit campus either for a tour or to meet up with old teachers and friends are encouraged to make an appointment at least three-working days before. For visits to specific teachers, please contact the respective division office so that they can help you coordinate an appropriate time to come by.
Please note: School activity spaces such as the weight room, gym, and other recreational facilities are NOT available for use during school hours. To use school facilities before or after hours, a booking is required. Please contact us for more details at [email protected]
