The youngest generation of ISKL students are taught with stimulating teaching methods uniting a plethora of emotional, sensorial, cognitive, physical, creative and social skills in order that they are inspired from an early age to access primary learning with enthusiasm. Focusing on foundational learning techniques, that recognise the differing developmental needs of each child, is imperative in building the blocks to a higher education. Our curriculum focuses on both teacher-led and child-led activities to ensure early and optimal success levels with classrooms that meet the needs of each individual Elementary member.
The ISKL environment nurtures its young students with structure so as to develop growing minds with an acute awareness of their personal role in the world, whilst also forming healthy relationships with peers and adults. Trust is an element of early life that children rely on and it is, therefore, integral in building communication skills during a child’s day-to-day life within the school environment.
Well resourced classrooms, indoor and outdoor learning spaces, equipped with purpose-built playgrounds and climbing equipment, give each child access to a safe and fun environment in which to develop gross motor, physical and social development skills.
Nature and nurture go hand in hand at ISKL whereby the seeds of life are sown in the Early Childhood years’ outdoor classrooms to establish empathy with the natural environment around them. The student’s role in assisting the future health of themselves and the world is learned through active play in understanding life skills including composting, recycling, up-cycling, cooking and health-driven activities.
“The future is not one dimensional and neither should a child’s education”.
The aim of all educators within the ISKL Early Childhood team is for these young students to become future educators in integrity and respect for the world they live in. Knowledge and understanding of how their, and others, carbon footprint impacts the environment is an unsurpassable element of establishing connections between personal, social and academic responsibility.
Early Years learning is a balanced partnership between child, parent and educator. Supporting each other in the structure of a personalized plan for each individual student is an approach that provides a strong foundation for their future. Content is integrated into thematic units and student-initiated interest areas in order to merge both child-led activities in hands-on learning spaces.
Dear Parents,
For our youngest students, learning is about inspiring curiosity and learning through play. ISKL’s Early Childhood Program (Prep Reception, Prep Junior, and Prep Senior) is based on the development of the whole child with social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative skills cultivated through learning experiences and activities within structured and creative environments.
In line with current research our teachers scaffold and support a broad range of active learning opportunities. Children construct their own knowledge about themselves, others, and the world around them by practicing developmentally appropriate skills, making choices about their individual learning, and communicating their understanding through healthy relationships with peers and adults.
Our Early Childhood faculty and staff are committed to ensuring an exceptional education for our learners. We value a partnership with parents and the connection between school and home, which nurtures a strong foundation for lifelong learning experiences.
Yours in partnership,
Julie Olson

Our classrooms are organized to meet the learning styles and developmental needs of young children. Children have opportunities for teacher-directed and child-directed activities.
Recognizing that children grow socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically at different rates, instruction is differentiated to ensure optimal success for each child.
Content is integrated into thematic units and student-initiated interest areas and is taught through learning experiences and activities within the learning environments. Please find below a curriculum overview of our Prep Reception and Junior:

Encouraging children from an early age to develop a love of reading, writing and storytelling develops a natural balance of oral language and emerging literacy skills. Using methods of interactive and shared activities promotes enthusiastic linguistic learners.
A plethora of resources utilized through hands-on activities develops early mathematical skills and concepts.
Children’s social skills develop by being encouraged to explore their own and others’ evolution in a culturally diverse and inspiring learning environment. Every child’s curiosity is naturally stimulated through observation and investigation within both indoor spaces and outdoor garden areas.
To master fine motor skills such as manipulating small objects, cutting, gluing and painting, children should first be encouraged to develop gross motor skills. With this in mind, our young learners develop movement patterns that build large muscle strength and coordination so they ride, swing, climb, balance and jump with confidence in a safe environment.
The safe and intentionally-designed outdoor learning experience enables young children to enjoy and have the ability to play, take risks, explore, experiment and make decisions. The life skills that are developed encourage a sense of responsibility and confidence in their actions, problem solving skills and relationships.
The integration of cooking as an early learning skill promotes a mathematical, scientific and literacy development mindset. It is an opportunity for students and parents to unite in sharing their cultural heritage with a wider community of friends.

Young students’ active involvement in books, words, pictures and ideas is a driven theme of learning to encourage a growth mindset, in-depth knowledge and understanding of letter/sound relationships. This is reinforced through drawing, storytelling and writing skills to build a more meaningful context of the academic and creative artform of language.
Play is a principal factor of self discovery, exploration and inquiry for a child. It is through both guided and free-choice activities, in an intentionally-designed environment, that they have the opportunity to design, create, role play, take risks and build social relationships with adults and their peers.
The use of concrete materials and active investigation encourages children to explore mathematical concepts, ideas and strategies that result in the development of a logical understanding of the language of mathematics. An integrated approach guides children through number sense, sorting, patterning, geometry and measurement.
Science begins with observation and investigation of the children’s immediate environment using the five senses and leads into inquiry about animals and nature surrounding them. Exploring these learning experiences inside and outside of the classroom stimulate skill practice and supports concept discussions.
Examples of projects in Prep-Senior include:
The development of a child’s social skills are extended within Prep-Senior for them to identify ways to help take care of themselves, their peers, community and the environment in which they live.
Specialist art, music and physical education lessons are introduced, taught by qualified and experienced teachers, that build upon fine and gross motor skills. These activities are integrated into both an indoor and outdoor timetable that explores movement through play.
In a technologically driven world, children have access to a wide range of interactive tools including computers and iPads to enhance their learning experience. Every classroom is equipped with a smart board, green screen recording and a creative, self-directed learning space known as ‘Maker Space’ that adds an extra dimension to learning with the integration of technology.
ISKL’s multicultural learning is supported through the World Language Programme (Chinese & Spanish) which commences in Prep-Senior. A specialist faculty based on research and understanding of individuality in learning incorporates extra support for those students requiring language, literacy, social, emotional and physical development.
