Middle School Curriculum

ISKL’s Middle School provides a critical bridge between the Elementary years and High School and offers the academic, physical, and social challenges needed by students to explore and develop their interests.

Our Middle School program has been specifically designed to encourage students to take initiative, become independent learners, find balance, and develop the academic and interpersonal skills needed to grow and reach their full potential as adolescent learners. Students are supported by expert educators who understand this important life stage which is characterized by rapid growth and change.

The Middle School program is designed to provide quality academic and social experiences in a supportive environment. There are a variety of courses for all students, including required courses, year-long electives, required trimester courses (or wheel courses) and trimester electives. The year-long required courses at all grade levels are Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Physical Education and World Language. Year-long elective courses include Band, Choir, Strings or Yearbook.

Ensuring students are future-ready is a critical component of ISKL’s mission to nurture successful global citizens.  ISKL’s Middle School Experience goes beyond the expected parameters of an international school by basing learning on student ownership; where education is not done ‘to’ students, but ‘with’ them. There are multiple elements integrated to our Middle School program, such as Agency, Malaysia Week, WIN (What I Need) Time, and Sports & Activities that empower students to develop their voice, exercise choice and practice future-ready life skills such as initiative, calculated risk taking, and belief in oneself in a supportive environment.

In addition to building our students’ skills and knowledge base in preparation for High School, our program also helps inform their decisions about curriculum and subject choices as they transition into Grade 9.

Please note: Subjects may be subject to change and may depend on student demand. World language placement is subject to internal assessment. Students deemed too advanced for our acquisition level classes may be required to take another language.
