For the latest session in our VOX ISKL series, we were joined by experts from The Institute for Social and Emotional Learning (IFSEL), Nick Haisman-Smith and Joe Tchen, for a special workshop on the importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), how it contributes to academic success, and how parents can nurture their own family’s well-being.

SEL describes the process of learning to recognize and manage emotions, care for others, make good decisions, and act ethically. Grounded in research, SEL has been proven to help students perform better academically and socially, navigate transitions and challenges, develop fulfilling relationships and contribute to a more caring world. These are just some of the many great reasons why SEL is embedded within our curriculum and an essential element of an ISKL education.

In addition to sharing their insights on the compelling research on the importance of social and emotional learning, Nick and Joe also provided a framework and practical strategies for managing and regulating emotions as well as coaching our children to better manage theirs.

ISKL has been working closely with IFSEL over the past three years and in addition to sharing their knowledge with parents, Nick and Joe conducted training sessions for our faculty and staff groups during a four-day professional development program. ISKL’s focus on SEL underpins our school’s Vision and Mission and as educators, we were extremely excited to be able to offer our parent and the wider community the opportunity to be part of this wonderful learning experience.
