Having represented ISKL four years in IASAS Touch Rugby, with two years as caption, Cultural Convention Choir for four years, and three years for Softball, Beryl Seiler (‘13) knew she was in the running for the Troy Marschang Award for competing in most IASAS in High School. She remembers, “We were a competitive bunch back then and liked to keep score of total IASAS events attended.”
She was, however, in good company. Beryl explains, “I was absolutely honored to win this award, since Troy Marschang was a fantastic all-around athlete and student. I did feel like I was robbing some incredible student-athletes of well-deserved recognition. Notably, I think of Riley Fergus and Georgina McKavanagh, who received numerous medals for their IASAS feats, and equally deserved to win the award.”
The award is named after Troy Marschang (‘07) who represented ISKL in 17 IASAS conventions or tournaments between 2004-2007.
For Beryl, the highlight of her own impressive tally of IASAS representation was being part of the teams and groups representing ISKL. She says, “What I would give to be back on the field or in the auditorium! I remember we used to have a post-IASAS blues period, coming down from the high of competition. I competed with some of my closest friends in IASAS events, and met some incredible people from other schools as well. I do still try to stay in contact with some of my teammates.”
As the award recognizes students who have a broad range of interests, beyond just academic, Beryl believes it assisted her university application. Studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in International Relations and Affairs and Spanish at Tufts University, Beryl says she continued to be involved in music and athletics.
After graduating in 2013, she is now pursuing a career in international relations. She says, “My time at ISKL was a huge influence in that choice! I am working as a program associate at Mathematica in Seattle, WA, where I am staffed primarily on education monitoring and evaluation projects in West Africa and Central America. On top of managing projects, I am also heavily involved in qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, and have been fortunate enough to travel to Senegal several times.”
To the 2020 recipient of the Troy Marschang Award, Beryl says, “Congratulations! I hope you continue pursuing your athletic and/or artistic talents after high school.”
