Early Childhood students visit BFM Radio

Last week ISKL Prep Junior classes visited the BFM radio station as part of a mini unit on effective listening and speaking. The learning unit is a collaborative effort between the Prep Junior Teachers, Carolyn Curtis and Karen Leese, and ISKL’s Speech Language Pathologist, Kate Balsamo. The unit is specifically designed to give ISKL Elementary School students a head start developing critical communication skills for the future. Over the past few weeks Kate has been working with the children on the skills and behaviors needed to be an effective listener. As a follow up to her lessons, she sent home an optional activity for the children to do with their families – a listening walk. One of our parents decided to do this activity with her child. Carla Newman, who is an ISKL Board Member and works at BFM, pursued this activity with her son Alex. On their walk Carla and Alex realized they were unable to “hear” all of the sounds around them. As a result, Carla took her son to BFM where their sound engineer helped him realize the science behind listening and the nuance of sounds.
