The following is an English translation of a story published in the Pokhara Hotline National Daily newspaper on November 5, 2016.
On November 6, 2016, students from The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) visited View Point School in Pokhara to conducted several activities at the school and as well as in the community. The main objective of ISKLs Global Action Program (GAP) is to enhance young people’s capacity for socially responsible leadership and compassion.
As conveyed by Headmaster of viewpoint School, Matrika Baral, his school has received constant support from ISKL for quality of education upgrades over the last 6 years. ISKL is not only supporting the school to enhance the quality of education but also to improve Viewpoint School’s physical structure. Due to ISKL support, our school is known as the best primary Government school in the area. Beside helping Viewpoint School, ISKL students and teachers are now actively participating in a major project to level the ground for the proposed community building. They have shown interest to continue support to complete this proposed community building in Pumdi Bhumdi 25, Pokhara.
As described by ISKL Group Leader, Mr. Shaun Gopal, the GAP initiative sent 160 students and teachers on service trips all over Nepal and 450 students and teachers are doing the same all over Asia. The main objectives of this trip will be to share and gain knowledge in a socially responsible way.
Mr. Gopal also said that all student’s groups have to be involved in productive community service work that involves physical labor. Some of ISKL groups are helping the community to build houses out of waste mineral water bottles and locally available raw materials while all groups are participant in new cultural experiences across a variety of different locations. Mr Gopal added, ISKL has got a fixed plan to bring their kids to Nepal every fall to get involved in such community service. He added, even though most of the kids are from privilege backgrounds, ISKL wants them to see the real world so they can understand the lives of others through first-hand experience.
