“Students, today is a joyous day and we are here to celebrate your successes – all you have accomplished this year, your contributions to our school, and, of course, your growth.  It is our pleasure today to present to you the awards that you have worked so hard to earn this school year. We recognize and appreciate the effort you have demonstrated both academically and outside of class.”

These were the opening words of The International School of Kuala Lumpur’s (ISKL) High School Principal Jeff Farrington, at ISKL’s Senior Awards Ceremony which was held on June 2 for ISKL’s 153 graduating students.

The annual event is an ISKL tradition, recognizing students who have demonstrated excellence, dedication, and passion for academics, sports, visual and performing arts, and community service. Congratulations to all the recipients. We are #ISKLproud of all your achievements and wish you all the success in your future endeavors!

2022 Senior Awards PostersValedictorians:
HongJu Lee and Joy Lee Loke Ern

This year we have two students with exactly the same GPA for all four semesters of Grade 11 and 12; this means we have two valedictorians. Remarkably, both students are not just great scholars, they have also contributed to our school in innumerable ways: music, service with refugees, culture clubs, leadership, and Model United Nations to name a few.

Most impressively, these two young students have achieved their academic success with kindness, consideration for others, and significantly, a lack of ego. ~ Jeff Farrington, High School Principal

About the Award:
The Valedictorian is the graduating student with the highest cumulative grade point average from 11th and 12th grades (four semesters).

Award criteria:

  • A student must have attended ISKL for all four semesters before graduation.
  • A student’s grade point average (GPA) is computed at the end of these four semesters and includes all courses except Teacher’s Aide

2022 Senior Awards Posters-DCThe Robert B. Gaw 12th Citizenship Award, Senior Class, awarded to Daniel Chadwick Muse

“So in this community where we enjoy the benefits of a private, privileged education, where our resources and access are unparalleled, where we recognize that kindness trumps grades, courtesy is more important than competition and our ability to be appreciative is what makes us unique.  This year we get to celebrate a student who exemplifies these qualities.  And that is why this year’s Robert B. Gaw award recipient for Grade 12 is Daniel Muse.” ~ Jeff Harwood, High School Assistant Principal

About the Award:
The Robert B. Gaw Citizenship Award is intended for students who demonstrate exemplary citizenship and is given to one student at each grade level. The award, sponsored by the PTA, is named in honor of Robert B. Gaw, who served as Headmaster at ISKL from 1970-1978.

  • Nominee exemplifies the international aspect of the school. He/she interacts positively with others and shows an appreciation for nationalities other than his/her own.
  • Nominee demonstrates courtesy to teachers, staff, and fellow students and shows respect for others’ rights.
  • Nominee demonstrates a positive attitude and willingness to support in-classroom and extracurricular projects and activities.

2022 Senior Awards Posters-HJLThe Hee Won Bahk ’94 Award for International Understanding awarded to HongJu Lee

“Courage, resilience, passion, versatility. Words which well describe the namesake of this award and ones which are also very apt for this year’s recipient. A remarkable, gifted and unique young lady, HongJu Lee is a true Renaissance woman. Across the spectrum of activities at ISKL, she has made an immensely positive impact on our community. At its core, this award embraces the values of internationalism and global citizenship, which HongJu has become a grand master of during her ISKL journey.” ~ Richard Martin, Social Studies/IB History/AP US History Teacher

About the Award:
Hee Won Bahk, Class of 1994, was killed in the Highland Towers tragedy in December 1993. At the time of her death, Hee Won was the student body secretary, a member of numerous organizations (MUN, Forensics, NHS), ranked number two in her class, and was highly respected by her peers and faculty. Although the past recipients of the award have been Seniors, the Hee Won Bahk Award is not restricted to a particular grade level.

The following criteria reflect these and other outstanding attributes of Hee Won:

  • The nominee is a good representative of his/her own country, with a positive attitude toward the life and culture of others.
  • The nominee can converse in at least two languages.
  • The nominee is a contributing force in the life of the school, with the ability to bring different people together into a sense of community, thus furthering the cause of international understanding.

2022 Senior Awards Posters-ESPrincipal’s Award awarded to Evelyn Schorr

“I am exhausted just thinking of all that Evelynn has accomplished in 3 years, and the seemingly endless amount of energy and care she possesses makes me look up to her as my role model. If every person was half the person Evelynn was, this world would be a much better place. Evelynn, you are ever so deserving to have this award. Best of luck in all your endeavors, and I know you will continue to make a difference in everyone’s lives that you interact with. I am a better person because I know you.“ ~ Becky Naughton, HS Social Studies Teacher
