The Year of the Ox is just around the corner. In Chinese culture, the Ox is a valued animal as it has positive characteristics such as hardworking and honesty.  An Ox year occurs every 12 years so if you were born in 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, or  2009 this is a special year for you!

Thank you to our Staff Association and our Chinese teachers, Yan Li and Ivy Qian (ES), and Marisha Guo (MS) for sharing these fun facts about Lunar New Year.

Chinese New Year Story

Prosperity, Peace, Longevity, And Luck!

In 2021, Lunar New Year celebrations began on February 12 and will culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 26. This means there is still plenty of time to enjoy some “must eat food”. As with many celebrations, food plays a major role during the Lunar New Year holiday and different foods are served to symbolize prosperity, peace, longevity and luck.

Our thanks to Ivy and Yan Li Qian (ES Chinese Teachers) and Marisha Guo (MS Chinese Teacher) for sharing the symbolism of these auspicious foods and insights into how they are served.
