Life-Centered Education

Life-Centered Education

Life-Centered Education provides programming in an inclusive environment in order to foster individualised skill development in students that will lead to meaningful relationships, community contributions and an independent and fulfilling life.

Life-Centered Education (LCE), an extension of our robust Learning Resource department, provides additional services such as life skills courses, social skills instruction and modified academics. The LCE is designed to meet the needs of students who have more significant intellectual, learning, or developmental differences. Students accepted into the program receive personalized academic programming with embedded social-emotional learning from highly-trained special educators.

Personalized Learning Plans and Instruction

What sets the LCE apart is its multidisciplinary team approach to designing targeted instructional plans based on each student’s needs in an inclusive setting. Each student has their own Student Success Plan (SSP) which is strength-based and intentionally designed to foster student independence and self-advocacy. This means that every student’s school day looks different based on their strengths and needs. Goals on the SSP are progress monitored and regularly reported on along with the progress reports from academic classes whether they are modified instruction or mainstream courses.

Instruction is delivered in multiple locations within the school including the LCE classrooms, multi-sensory rooms, and general education classrooms. Each student’s SSP indicates the degree of participation in mainstream academic courses, including International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, specialist classes (art, music, & physical education), and after school activities based on the student’s abilities and strengths. Opportunities to engage in classes and activities with peers are a key aspect of our inclusion programming.

Awards and Recognition

In 2019, ISKL won the prestigious International School Leader Awards in the Initiative for Inclusion category for its LCE program. The awards were hosted by the UK’s International School Leader Magazine and included nominations from schools in 38 different countries
The program is offered schoolwide for students in Elementary, Middle, and High School. The High School LCE program is the only one of its kind available to older students in Kuala Lumpur.
