Middle School Student Book Reviews for August/September 2021
The academic year began with a host of weekly book reviews presented by our very own Middle School!
Each week students share their insights on books found in the MS and HS library. Here is a summary of their book reviews done so far!
ISKL Book Review No. 1 by Zhi H. C., Grade 8 student

Title: Ground Zero
Author: Alan Gratz
Genre: Historical Fiction
“This book is a historical fiction book about the 9-11 attack. It talks about it from two different perspectives: a boy born in the US in 2001 named Brandon and a girl in Afghanistan named Mashina in 2019. It talks about how the attacks impacted the world in 2001 and how they still impact us today in 2021. What I like about the book is that it gives me an insight into this event.”

Title: They Both Die at the End
Author: Adam Silvera
“This book is set in a world where every day a small number of people are picked by an organization called ‘Death-Cast’ to have 24 hours left to live. At the end of those 24 hours, those humans will die one way or another, whether from natural causes or unfortunate death.
‘This book focuses on two specific people who have never met before and how they created an incredible friendship and more from those 24 hours. The book’s characters’ names are Mateo and Rufus, and the adventures they go on are so entertaining to read!
‘I would recommend this book to you because the writing style is unique, as it takes course over a day, which I’ve never seen before. Adam Silvera has been able to keep me hooked the entire time I read, and I finished it within a day because it was so well-written. ‘They Both Die in the End’ has taught me how much friendship can help you when it’s pure.”

Title: Murder on the Orient Express
Author: Agatha Christie
Genre: Mystery
“This book is a classic “Who Dunnit” mystery that keeps you hooked until the end. Set on a luxury train, which is stopped for the night because of snow. One of the passengers is mysteriously stabbed 12 times. And no one has left the train since. Hercule Poirot, the detective, takes up the case. He interviews all of the passengers, until at the end when he finds out who the murderer is.
‘My favorite bit is when Poirot interviews all the suspects separately, and it seems like every time he interviews one, it looks like it’s a different person who did it! “

Title: The Curiosity House: The Shrunken Head
Author: Lauren Oliver and HC Chester
Genre: Mystery
“I really enjoyed the characters, and the plot was interesting. It kept me hooked the entire time.”
ISKL Book Review No. 6 by Nandini R., Grade 8 student
Title: The Book Thief
Author: Markus Zusak
Genre: Historical Fiction
“I like this book because of its interesting narrative structure, as the story is narrated by death. It’s also told in a non-chronological order.”
