ISKL encourages students to develop skills, knowledge, and consideration to make the world a better environment where we all can live. School-wide practices accomplish this through service-learning and environmental awareness programs incorporating various initiatives and activities. The development of daily habits, both in and out of school, helps students to investigate sustainability issues, understand alternative perspectives, and translate ideas and findings into action.
Service learning and environmental education are integrated into our curriculum so that each student develops an understanding of the importance of active community involvement, and learns the skills needed to take action and make positive changes in the world around them.
Service Learning is translated as ‘active community involvement. It instills lifelong core values in all ISKL students to develop an understanding of their personal impact and role in environmental and world change.
The ISKL curriculum is designed to ensure all students become involved and gain an understanding of community needs, solution planning, and action. Opportunities are available for students to be ‘agents of change’, including service forums with inspirational guest speakers and student-led initiatives with service being the focus of any action plan.

All Grade 9-11 students participate in ISKL’s unique Global Action Program (GAP) designed to build students’ awareness of emerging global issues by involving them in a range of cultural, environmental, and service opportunities within Southeast Asia. Projects range from working alongside communities to building community shelters in areas devastated by earthquakes to coral reef restoration.
By combining service learning with outdoor adventure, we enable our students to gain different perspectives, build their global understanding, and also develop new skills. Our students all report feeling a greater sense of resilience, confidence and compassion when they return.

A long-standing tradition and true highlight of the school-year is Malaysia Week, experiential learning at its best. For one week every April, students engage in outdoor interdisciplinary education opportunities in the rainforests and coral reefs of Malaysia, making memories that will last a lifetime.
Students learn to work together as a community and deal positively with new situations, recognizing self-perceived limitations and challenging themselves to go beyond their comfort zones.

ISKL offers various service-based clubs and activities that students can participate in or lead. Our students have engaging, inclusive, and challenging opportunities to develop leadership skills, pursue their interests, and connect with peers. Through meaningful and varied community partnerships, our students are encouraged to make positive changes in the community through hands-on effort.
These projects support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and encourage students to build connections within an array of communities in the Kuala Lumpur area and beyond. They include:
In partnership with these communities, ISKL students learn to connect quality education with reduced inequalities by engaging in music, art, coding, craft and a plethora of activities. This dedication to community partnership growth exemplifies School-wide Learning Results (SLRs), encouraging students to Live Ethically, Collaborate Constructively and Think Critically . Students learn that through their actions and practical steps, no matter how small, they can positively impact the community.

The Eco-Schools Programme is coordinated by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in Malaysia. It is the largest sustainable school program in the world, with 52,000 schools registered in the program in 67 countries.
ISKL is a member of the Eco-Schools Organization and was the first school in Malaysia to receive both the internationally acclaimed Green Flag Award in 2013 for excellence in environmental action and learning as well as Malaysia’s Green Building Index platinum rating for sustainable design.
Living ethically is an ISKL initiative for all community members to demonstrate personal and social responsibility in the care and working conditions for ourselves and others. Sustainability clubs include The Earth Club, Green Council and Gardening Club, all aiming to create awareness and change throughout the school. Alongside these projects sit organized events and activities implementing strategies to reduce energy consumption and resource waste.
The Development Fund is a culmination of projects that incorporate the Jungle Walls at the school entrances, Jungle Trees in the Coaches Garden and the Community Edible Garden. Across all three divisions of ISKL, the teaching and learning focus leans towards supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These collectively provide inspiration for teacher/student-led future initiatives focusing on encouraging and empowering students to adopt a positive perspective, with an international mindset, whilst collaborating towards shared sustainability goals.
Recently, we were rewarded with the Green Flag Award in recognition of ISKL’s environmental achievements. Before we received the award, inspectors from the Eco-Schools paid a visit to our campus and observed the steps we take towards improvement in environmental action.
