This past Wednesday, the Grade 7 Science team lead by Ms. Laurie Larsen and Mr. Dan Varney, hosted ISKL’s first ever Ecology Symposium. It was an excellent opportunity for our students to interact first hand with members of our global community on the issues related to sustainability. The symposium consisted of 11 presenters in total; seven presented in person and four presented via Skype from various locations around the world. The presenters represented the World Wildlife Federation (WWF), Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and Crops for the Future, to name a few. During the sessions, students were exposed to the challenges these organizations face to promote ecological, social and economic sustainability. Many were also given the opportunity to engage in problem solving skills by examining real life case studies and issues. The students were buzzing with energy and enthusiasm when the symposium concluded with a debriefing session. The learning that took place was authentic and relevant to our students and just another step toward meeting our mission of creating “socially responsible, global citizens” at ISKL.
