Grade 2 students take part in virtual writing workshop

FLEXIBLE-CURICULUM During a recent online whole Grade 2 assembly, the students were listening to a read-aloud by faculty member, Alex Lancia, when they were ‘interrupted’ by Elementary School (ES) counselor Christine Wright who had lost the ISKL panther!

After searching far and wide, the Panther was found swimming in a pool close to campus and rescued by Chris’ dog, Roxy!

The Grade 2 team created this staged experience to support the personal narrative writing unit, which the students are now embarking on. A core component of the unit is for students to share a moment in their lives through a story, and a central element in the writing workshop model at ISKL is for teachers to model the writing with the students.

The teaching team realized early on that for the modeling to be successful in an online setting, they needed to create a ‘shared moment’ that would resonate with the participants and anchor the narrative – basically, a shared moment in time that everyone could relate to and write about.

The 10-minute “Roxy to the Rescue” experience was such an excellent experience for our students! Rich with action, sights, and sounds, this experience will propel our young Grade 2 writers to stretch their imagination and explore their writing potential as they begin their very own personal narrative writing journeys.

Thank you to all the Grade 2 faculty team and ES Counselor Chris Wright for putting together this fun and exciting experience for our second graders to enjoy their learning virtually!
