Kudos to the International School of Kuala Lumpur’s (ISKL) Director of Talent and Culture, Ika Azwa Muzamal, and former Director of Learning, Praxia Apostle, for presenting at the virtual event ‘2021 Women’s (Re)Institute’, back in June 2021.

The virtual forum organized by Carney, Sandoe & Associates was composed of webinars and workshops dedicated to supporting and empowering women working in education.

On the second day of the event, Ika and Praxia presented an hour long live webinar titled ‘More Than Conversations: A Feminist Approach to Equity Work in International Schools.’ Ika says, “We knew that for this work to have authenticity and be transformative, it needed to begin with our community of operational staff and teaching faculty listening to one another’s stories, building relationships, and creating a shared vision for change.”

Praxia and Ika shared their story of building and sustaining change related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in an international school setting. They also also described how they began a school-wide initiative at ISKL focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) and applied the principles of feminist pedagogy to apprise ISKL’s leadership approach.

“We shared stories of our learning and leadership journey, how to keep relationships at the heart of your equity work, and how these approaches and strategies can be adapted to any school setting where DEIJ is driving change,” says Praxia.

Participants in the webinar walked away with tools and models to reflect on current leadership structures present in their own context and how to nurture empowerment, voice, and community through change.

Thanks to Ika and Praxia for representing ISKL by sharing their experiences and upholding our commitment to upholding DEIJ values at our school.
