Panthers of ISKL #123: Daisy Q. – The Enthusiast

POISKL-2022-2023-Daisy-J

“ISKL is a welcoming community! Kids are enjoying their life at school – parents too! There are a lot of opportunities for parents to socialize with others. We are learning, sharing, caring, chatting, having fun, and enjoying the experience!”

Daisy Q. is an ISKL Parent who has joined the community back in 2017. She currently is an HS Grade Level Coordinator (GLC) for Grade 9 liaison, and was the Co-Chair for iFest 2022.

Here is Daisy’s story:

Tell us more about yourself.

Hi, this is Jian Xiu Qian – but you can call me Daisy! I am from mainland China and was born and raised in Nanjing, my hometown. Nanjing has been settled as the capital of China twelve times in 2500 years – it’s a beautiful and historic city!

Before starting our adventure in a new country, Malaysia wasn’t first on our list! But after traveling here, we realized it’s a beautiful country – Malaysian people are so friendly and kind! We changed our minds and decided to move to Malaysia at the end of 2015. Johor Bahru was our first home in Malaysia since there is a Legoland; that’s my son Benny’s favorite place at that moment!

What year did your child start ISKL, and what grade are they in now? What made you choose ISKL?

Benny was a 2nd grader in 2015 when we transferred him from Nanjing to Johor Bahru (JB). After two years of learning at JB, we had a great conversation with his best friend, who moved to KL from JB! He loved ISKL and enjoyed every moment! So YES – we moved to ISKL from JB without any concerns! At that time, Benny was a 4th grader and started his ISKL journey in 2017. Benny is a 9th grader now – how time flies!

How has your experience been as a parent at ISKL?

ISKL is a welcoming community! Kids are enjoying their life at school – parents too! There are a lot of opportunities for parents to socialize with others. We are learning, sharing, caring, chatting, having fun, and enjoying the experience!

POISKL-Blog-Daisy-JAre you involved in any organizations at ISKL?

Yes! I am currently involved as an HS Grade Level Coordinator (GLC), acting as the Grade 9 liaison, and I was Co-Chair for iFest 2022, the biggest event at ISKL yearly! Also, I have been a committee chair for Troop 818 for the Boy Scouts of America since 2020, and I was MS Chinese liaison for two years before I became involved in the HS GLC!

Any words of advice for new parents or those who are joining ISKL?

It’s a home! Or it will become your home!

Describe your most memorable moments at ISKL.

There are a lot of good memories at ISKL. One memory is Benny’s Court of Honor of Boy Scouts! We were so proud of him every time he received his badges and patches!

Another is making friends at ISKL. I met a lady named Lise who is Danish! We met at the school COVID clinic as volunteers and sat beside each other. She had lived in China, so we talked about food, cities, and the differences between Western and Chinese cultures! I cannot believe it since we ran a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) program called “English & Chinese Bandy” and became good friends! Lots of Chinese parents met with other countries during this program too. We had fun things to do, like hiking, learning to make Danish meatballs, DIY lanterns, celebrating the lantern festival, etc.! We shared our language and cultures during every activity – and tons of laughs!

What do you love most about ISKL?

The community and the people at ISKL.

Who or what inspires you?

Mark Van Cott, a parent and Scoutmaster for Troop 818B! Selfless dedication – those are the best words to describe him!

What does “Know yourself, care for all and create a better world.” mean to you?

We are not alone! ISKL is a family, and we take care of each other! Once a panther, always a panther!
