Next week we begin our celebration of Inclusive Schools Week, an annual event that provides a platform for schools around the world to reflect on their inclusion journey. As outlined in our Guiding Statements, nurturing a culture of inclusion, cultivating DEIJ mindsets, and embracing the diversity present in our own and each other’s identities are integral to our school’s learning journey and embedded within all we do.
This year’s Inclusive Schools Week theme, Unity Within Our Community truly speaks to our ongoing commitment to embracing the diversity present in our own and each other’s identities so that all community members feel they belong, are valued and supported. In addition to the activities we have planned for students next week, we also have two important on campus events taking place on Thursday, December 1 that are open to both the ISKL and the wider community.
At VOX ISKL CommUNITY @ISKL (December 1, 8 am – 9 am) we will be hearing from our inspiring line-up of panelists about what inclusion looks like and feels like for them, the language and cultural sensitivities to be aware of when talking about race, disability, mental health, and neurodiversity, as well as learning about how to advocate for a differently-abled child. Our panelists include an ISKL parent, two Paralympians, and specialists in the area of learning differences. Aligned with our student-centered philosophy, VOX will be moderated by two of our High School students and promises to be a thought-provoking discussion and a wonderful opportunity to deepen our understanding and learn from the diverse perspectives and identities of others.
Following the VOX panel discussion, we will be holding our annual Resource Fair (December 1, 9 am – 11 am) to share the support that ISKL has in place for all our learners and to also connect parents with the resources and support available in Kuala Lumpur. Again, we have a great lineup of service providers covering speech, language, and occupational therapy, academic, social, and executive skills support, behavioral services, mental health support, and interpretation and translation services.
We very much hope to see you there as we continue our inclusion journey together. Please click HERE for more details about both events and how to register.
We also encourage parents to attend ISKL’s Open Board Meeting next Tuesday (November 29). It is an important opportunity for our community to hear updates from ISKL and our Board Committees and we hope to see you there!
