“ If any school could provide the necessary means of success in the IB diploma program and set you on a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, it is ISKL.”
Malaysian student Delphine is one of ISKL’s IB scholars who joined in August. Her strength and determination have spurred her to learn how to overcome obstacles and face the impossible, even when the going gets tough.
Here is Delphine’s story:
Can you tell us more about yourself?
I was born in Perak, Malaysia, and have lived in Petaling Jaya all my life. I come from a family of six and have two sisters and a brother. I am the second eldest of four, so I am old enough to set an example but young enough to get away with many things!
What encouraged you to join ISKL as an IB Scholar?
ISKL truly is any student’s dream school. I first got a glimpse of ISKL when I represented my previous school in the SEA forensics tournament in 2019 and 2020. I remember being in absolute awe of the cutting-edge facilities on campus and thinking about how it must be a privilege to be a student at this school.
As I learned more about ISKL on the school website, I was glad to read about its highly qualified educators who would be excellent guides on a pathway as rigorous as the IB.
If any school could provide the necessary means of success in the IB diploma program and set you on a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, it is ISKL. I then decided to apply for the scholarship, which was one of my best decisions.
How has the process of transition to ISKL been for you?
It has been a definite culture shock as I have been in public schools all my life, but overall, it has been nothing short of amazing! I am so grateful to have met a wonderful group of friends who have been so helpful in helping me navigate campus life here at ISKL. Simran, Charlotte, Jamie, Zoe, Jade, and my peer helper, Iring, are just some of the people who are the reason school kicked off to a great start.
I enjoy my classes very much, and it is encouraging to have such dedicated teachers guiding me for the next two years. I am very thankful to be surrounded by such a supportive community that has already made me feel accepted.
Can you tell us about your hobbies and interests?
Music has always been an integral part of my life. I sing and play the guitar, piano, flute, and cajon. You can always find me singing or playing my instruments whenever I have nothing else to do!
Graphic design and video editing are also my other interests – these are skills I picked up during the lockdown and frequently utilized for school or other projects.
Do you participate in any co-curricular activities at ISKL?
I have recently joined the Thespians Society and the Chin Community Partnership club! As someone who loves theater and has a heart for children, I am excited to get involved as I participate in activities that suit my interests and passions.
What are your future aspirations after you graduate from ISKL?
As of now, I am thinking of following in my dad’s footsteps and pursuing a degree in Law. However, in an ever-advancing world, I do want to keep my options open and with an open mind.
With this in mind, what are your thoughts on your career pathway?
I have always wanted my career to be devoted to improving the well-being of children. I believe that when the foundation of your career is passion and competency, you never have to work a day in your life. Whatever pathway I choose, I would like it to support something I care about and harness my skills for a good cause.
What are personal hopes and dreams for the future?
My biggest hope is to make my parents proud of my progress in the IB program. I could have never gotten this far without all their sacrifices and support, and I am determined to keep doing my best and not be disheartened by failures, as I believe nothing is impossible when you set your mind on something.
Who or what inspires and influences you?
Both my parents have been inspirations to me since I was a kid. They came from so little but worked extremely hard to get to where they are today. They have given my siblings and me everything we could ever need to succeed, which is one thing that keeps me going whenever I face challenges of any sort. They have shown me that hard work does not go unrewarded and that no dream is too big when you put in the effort.
What is your most memorable moment at ISKL?
So far, my most memorable moment was being cast as the White Witch in the High School (HS) play: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity to be part of such an incredible production and work with incredibly talented cast members who inspire me in their unique way. I cannot wait for the play to come out in a few short weeks!
What does the ISKL vision: know yourself, care for all, and create a better world mean to you?
In a world that can pressure you into conforming to its worldly standards, to know yourself is to recognize that you were not born to be like everyone else. It’s also realizing your strengths and using them for the greater good, looking out for the people around you, and striving for something greater than yourself!
